Testimonials
Do you feel as though RT is meaningful?
It helps you realize the skills you need for college, helps you learn to communicate with the people around you and helps us learn how the college setting is academically"
Avid Student
Yes, 1) Helped me get a better understanding of how college works. 2) Tutors helped me with my school work, and subjects I struggle in. 3) Improved my communications skills and ability to work with others."
Avid Student
Yes it gives another person to work things out with instead of just teachers, helps give us new study methods and helps us build and work together."
Avid Student
Yes because they reach out to students younger than them and they help them work on life skills, develop character, and understand their studies."

Testimonials
This program has increased my comfort level talking about tough social issues, mentoring, leading groups and conversations, and working with students. It has made me more sure that I want to continue my education to become a teacher, and has made me feel passionate about students and working with them. This program is run by passionate people, who were able to help us just as much as the students, and who made sure that each of the mentors learned something, if not more, than the students on any given day."

As a first generation student, I am amazed by the work that Rise Together has been doing. Not only is this program incredibly beneficial for the first generation students, but also for the mentors as well. As mentors, we work with the AVID students on skill building to advance them into college. We work on academic, professional, emotional, and social skills. The mentors also gain leadership and professional skills as well. Rise Together allows students of all ages and grades to grow and progress in a better future."

I really feel as if Rise Together is a unique youth mentoring program because in it we discuss social issues while also assisting through tutoring and sharing our college experiences."
UVA Facilitator
Rise Together is an amazing program that has given me a new perspective on middle school students. Working with several students from the AVID program at Walton MS has helped me to understand the issues they are facing in their school and community. At a forum about race and racism I was blown away by the maturity of our students and their contributions and reflections. Going in I expected the students to blow off the topic of race. However, when given the opportunity they embraced it and used the opportunity to share personal experiences and thoughts. Overall, through Rise Together I was able to understand that race and racism aren’t topics that kids avoid and have no experience with. On the contrary, middle school students have intellectual thoughts about these topics. And when they are given a safe and welcoming environment, like Rise Together, these students are able to trust me and share with me to help me learn and think about race and racism in ways I had never considered."

The Rise Program is great program for first generation college students that I wish I had when I was looking at college. The guidance and help provided by this program may not be realized by the students now, but in the future they will see the benefit from the program."

Rise Together is an incredible opportunity to mentor local Charlottesville youth and help them attain their greatest potential."

I started volunteering with Rise Together when I took a teaching class for fun, and it changed my life! I originally didn’t have a interest working in education, but Rise Together has opened my eyes to how much I enjoy working in schools and the need for it. This program is having a great impact on the schools and has lead me to pursue school counseling."
